Love is in the air: why Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to review your Will

Valentine’s Day naturally turns our thoughts toward the people we love most. It’s a day for heartfelt gestures and celebrating those we love, but it's also a surprisingly fitting time to reflect on something far less romantic but much more meaningful: your Will.

Many people don’t realise that marriage automatically revokes an existing Will, unless the Will was made in contemplation of that marriage. This means that if you have recently tied the knot but haven’t yet reviewed your Will, you may no longer have a valid Will in place.

In addition, without a Will setting out your wishes, the law doesn’t provide for long-term partners, even if you have been together for many years. It also does not provide for stepchildren, regardless of how long they have been part of your family.

If you do not have a valid Will, your estate would pass in line with the rules of intestacy. These rules might not reflect your wishes; they don’t account for your personal preferences, the needs of your loved ones, or the complexities of many modern family structures.

Whatever your situation is this Valentine’s Day, reviewing your Will is one of the most important steps you can take to protect the people you love most. Love isn’t just about the big gestures; sometimes it’s about making sure your loved ones will be looked after when you’re no longer around.

Updating your Will might not seem romantic, but it may well be one of the most loving actions you can take.
