New year, new Will

For many of us, the new year is a time for setting goals, making plans, and thinking about the future. It’s therefore the perfect time to reflect on your Will and ensure it still aligns with your wishes.

Your Will is one of the most important documents you’ll ever create. It sets out how your estate should be distributed when you pass away, and ensures that your loved ones are looked after when you’re no longer around. But life doesn’t stand still and neither should your Will.

Major life events such as marriage, divorce, the birth of children or grandchildren, or the death of a loved one can all affect the validity or relevance of your Will. In addition, changes in your financial situation, property ownership, or even your charitable interests may also mean your Will needs updating.

Failing to review your Will regularly can lead to unintended consequences, confusion, or even disputes between family members. In some cases, outdated Wills may no longer be legally effective, leaving your estate subject to intestacy rules.

A solicitor can help you review your Will to ensure it remains clear, legally correct, and aligned with your current circumstances. We can also advise on inheritance tax planning and ways to benefit someone who is unable look after money for themselves.

This new year, give yourself and your loved ones the peace of mind that comes with knowing your affairs are in order. Whether it’s a simple update or a complete rewrite, why not make reviewing your Will one of your New Year's resolutions?
