Don’t get left home alone this Christmas: a lawyer’s take on planning ahead

Every December, I find myself watching Home Alone. Kevin McCallister’s clever traps and quick thinking always make me laugh, but they also remind me of something important: life runs a lot smoother when you plan ahead.

As a private client solicitor, I see what happens when families don’t have the right plans in place. Unlike Kevin, you can’t rely on swinging paint cans or icy steps to protect what matters most. Your security comes from something far more practical: having your affairs in order.

Why planning matters

The McCallisters’ chaos started with a missed headcount and a frantic dash to the airport. In real life, a lack of planning can lead to stress, disputes, and unnecessary costs for your loved ones. A clear Will and Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) make sure your family isn’t left scrambling if the unexpected happens.

Your own security system

Kevin’s booby traps were creative, but they weren’t foolproof. Life can be unpredictable, but having a well-thought-out plan gives you the best possible protection. Think of it as your personal security system: it won’t stop every surprise, but it will safeguard your assets, reduce tax exposure, and make sure your wishes are clear. It’s smarter than a swinging paint can and far less messy!

Don’t let the wet bandits win

In the film, Harry and Marv are after the McCallisters’ valuables. In real life, the ‘bandits’ might be unnecessary tax bills, family disputes or delays in probate. Proper planning keeps those risks at bay, so your estate doesn’t get soaked.

This Christmas, give the gift of certainty

While you’re enjoying the festive season, take a moment to think about your future. Updating your Will or putting LPAs in place might not sound as exciting as decorating the tree, but it’s one of the best gifts you can give your family—peace of mind.

If you’d like to start the conversation in the New Year, I’d be delighted to help. Until then, have a wonderful Christmas and remember, good planning beats booby traps every time!

Top five Home Alone lessons for estate planning

  1. Always do a headcount – The McCallisters forgot Kevin; don’t forget to review your Will and make sure everyone you care about is included.
  2. Have a backup plan – Kevin improvised brilliantly, but you don’t want to rely on improvisation in real life. LPAs ensure someone you trust can step in if needed.
  3. Secure the house – Kevin’s traps kept the burglars out; your estate plan keeps unnecessary tax and disputes away.
  4. Think ahead – Kevin planned every move. Estate planning is about thinking ahead so your loved ones aren’t left in chaos.
  5. Don’t leave it to chance – The McCallisters assumed everything would go smoothly. Life doesn’t always work that way—planning gives certainty.
