What can Ozzy Osbourne teach us about making a will?

When we think of Ozzy Osbourne, we picture the Prince of Darkness, a rock legend with a wild past and a career that spans decades. But behind the theatrics and heavy metal anthems lies a man who, like all of us, had to face the realities of life… and death. Ozzy Osbourne’s recent passing has sparked conversations not just about his music but also about how he prepared for the inevitable.

Why making a will matters

A Will is more than just a legal document, it's your voice when you are no longer around. A Will ensures that your wishes are set out and encourages the smooth administration of your estate. Without a Will, your assets will be distributed according to strict legal rules, which might not reflect your personal intentions.

It would appear that Ozzy, despite his rebellious image, understood this. Although the full details of his Will have not yet been made public, the information circulated by the press suggest that Ozzy took steps to ensure that his wishes were honoured and his family was supported.

Lessons from Ozzy’s final wishes

  • Plan for a personal farewell - It’s said that Ozzy didn’t want a sombre send-off, he envisioned a celebration, perhaps even with a few light-hearted pranks. He also reportedly wished to be laid to rest in a garden, with a tree planted above him. Honouring such unique and heartfelt wishes is only possible when they’re shared in advance. Planning ahead ensures your farewell reflects your personality and values.
  • Provide for and protect your loved ones - In large and blended families such as Ozzy’s, a well-crafted Will plays a vital role. It ensures that every loved one is thoughtfully provided for, helps prevent disputes and offers clarity during emotionally challenging times. Indeed, it has been suggested that Ozzy included a poignant request in his Will that his wife, Sharon, receives a bouquet of black roses at regular intervals after his passing.

What should you include in your Will?

  • Appointment of executors – Who will carry out your wishes?
  • Guardianship – Who will care for your children if they’re under 18?
  • Distribution of assets – Who gets what?
  • Digital assets – What should happen to your online accounts and digital property?
  • Funeral wishes – Do you want a traditional service or something more personal? Do you want to be buried or cremated?

Don’t leave it too late

Ozzy appears to have acknowledged the importance of making arrangements for when he was no longer around, as he is reported to have said “yes, a bit of planning is the right thing to do for the family you leave behind” in 2011.

While we can’t avoid death, we can prepare for it. Making a Will is one of the most important things you can do for your family and for yourself. If you would like support or advice with making a Will, please contact me.
