'Willanthropy' - a new term for an old idea

Remember a Charity (part of the Chartered Institute of Fund Raising) works to encourage more people to leave a gift in their will to charity. They have recently coined the term 'willanthropy' to celebrate the act of leaving a gift to charity in a will, however small.

Many people are keen to remember a charity or charities in their will but some may not realise this is even an option. Obtaining advice from a specialist solicitor can help a testator explore all the possibilities open to them - whether leaving a set amount of money, a share of the estate or even choosing charities as the ultimate beneficiaries of a trust.

Importantly, dying without a will prevents you from leaving a gift to charity. The intestacy rules mean that only relations can inherit.
