Pets and divorce: who keeps the dog?

The below article looks at the issue of who gets to keep the beloved pet following separation. The article highlights that following the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of couples and families adding a pet to their home has massively increased which, in turn, unfortunately, increases the number of disputes relating to them.

Being a dog owner myself, I personally think it is important, albeit not very enjoyable, to discuss at the time of getting one who would keep the pet, or arrangements for sharing the care of the pet, should you separate in the future.

As important as your pet is to you, you do not want to be spending money going through court proceedings to decide on this.

Despite being man’s best friend, dogs and other pets are treated as chattels under English family law. This means that your pet dog is afforded the same status as the fridge freezer, couch, and kitchen table you once shared with your partner.
