Welsh procurement policy statement

As a procurement lawyer who works with a wide range of procurement professionals, I was delighted to see the Welsh Government wanted to "raise the long-term standing and profile of the procurement profession" and had set this out as one of its key principles in the Wales procurement policy statement. Procurement professionals have long been undervalued with procurement often seen as a "compliance function" rather than as a key means by which an organisation can deliver its strategic aims.

The policy statement also includes commitments to promote "value-based procurement", and "prioritise carbon reduction and zero emissions through more responsible and sustainable procurement", both of which are key themes we would want to support.

Welsh public sector procurement is a powerful lever with ability to affect sustained change to achieve social, economic, environmental and cultural outcomes for the well-being of Wales.
