Eligibility for housing post-Brexit

Anyone who has looked at the Government website recently will no doubt have noticed the countdown - not to Christmas but to 31st December and Brexit.

The Government has updated its information about eligibility for housing for EEA and Swiss citizens from 1st January 2021 to include publication of a letter that has been sent to all local authorities. That information is available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/access-to-social-housing-and-homelessness-assistance-for-eea-and-swiss-citizens-in-england.

For local authorities, they will need to ensure that their eligibility and allocation policy and procedure reflect the new rules and take into account the updated Allocation Guidance and Homelessness Code of Guidance once published.

Private registered providers of social housing may also want to review their own policies and procedures to see if they want to make any changes to mirror the statutory position for local authorities.

Look out for a more detailed briefing we'll be producing shortly about all things post Brexit.
